design_process:grill_shack
ITEM: This project represents the process that a design can go through as it evolves. While the final product will not win any design awards, the result was what the owner had envisioned.
DEMAND: The owner need a quick turn-around and came to me with a simple idea of a “tiki hut / island” vernacular for the design. No pictures or concept sketches were designed. The only piece that lent an indication of scale was the grill itself, which was then designed around.
Sketch_1: Initial idea which was used to evoke a better understanding of the concept & direction the owner had in mind.
Sketch_2a_&_2b: Two new ideas were presented to the owner. The first a different take on a designed shack. The second, more of a monolith that the owner described after the 2nd meeting.
Sketch_3: Building off of Sketch_2b, another meeting refined the requirements of the shack. A lighter roof, possibly canopy material, less bulk for the columns, but wide enough on the front for signage, and pushing the grill outside of the shack.
Sketch_4: After review, the owner required more shading for the gille operator and pushing the grill entirely out of the way of the roof cover to account for possible smoke from grilling. The owner also wanted to add a swinging door that could shield guests from entering as well as closing the shack at night.
